ATTORNEY PROFILES

JOAN H. DEANS, attorney at law, is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law. As a student, she was law clerk for the General Counsel of the Social Security Administration (formerly a branch of the Health and Human Services Department). She is licensed in the states of Missouri and Kansas as well as area federal courts, including the Western and Eastern Districts of Missouri, District of Kansas, Eighth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the Court of Veterans Appeals. She has represented thousands of Social Security disability claimants in Missouri and Kansas since 1985 from the initial application process through federal court appeals.

She founded J.H. Deans Law Office on September 18, 1989, and has since represented claimants as far west as California and as far east as Massachusetts. In 1990, she was of counsel for an area litigation firm representing the Kansas City School District against asbestos manufacturers. She is a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives Helping Hand of Goodwill Industries; serves on the advisory boards for the Lupus Foundation of America -Greater Kansas City Chapter and the Epilepsy Foundation of the Heart of America, and a volunteer for the Arthritis Foundation Speakers Bureau. GERALDINE WATKINS MIMS, attorney at law, joined J.H. Deans Law Office in March 1998 as a law clerk. She became licensed to practice law in the state of Missouri in October 1998 and is now a full-time associate attorney. She has successfully argued Social Security disability cases before the U. S. District Court, Western District of Missouri and has researched and written numerous federal briefs on behalf of claimants. Her educational background includes a bachelor of science in social work from the Oklahoma Christian University of Arts and Sciences and a juris doctor from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Watkins Mims was an income maintenance caseworker for the Missouri Division of Family Services for six years. In addition, she was a disability counselor for three years for Disability Determination Services, the state agency that develops Social Security disability claims.


STAFF PROFILES

LORRAINE GIERINGER contributes many years of experience gained from the legal, medical records and insurance industries to J.H. Deans Law Office. She has been involved with helping people with disabilities pursue their Social Security disability benefits for 11 years, eight of these working exclusively with the J.H. Deans Law Office. She is a wife, mother and foster parent. Her full schedule also includes actively working with a young girls' service organization and attending college part time.

MICHELE BRAY oversees the filing and provides clerical assistance through the DECA program at Raytown South High School, where she is a senior. DECA is an association of high school and post high school marketing students and is intended to provide personal and professional development in business marketing and management.
